Gallstones Symptoms
Gallstones are formed inside your gallbladder and are made from bile. Your gallbladder is an organ in your body that looks like a sack. It is located on the upper right part of your abdomen. It is positioned under the front rib cage on your right just below your pancreas and liver.
Like your pancreas and liver, the gallbladder is part of the biliary system. This bodily system is responsible for the production of digestive enzymes such as bile. The bile in your body is actually a liquid that your liver produces. It is helpful in the digestion of fats. You need to know what the gallstones symptoms are in case you experience such a condition.
Types of Gallstones
There are actually two types of gallstones, namely pigment stones and cholesterol stones. Pigment stones on one hand form when the bile accumulates excessive amounts of bilirubin. On the other hand, cholesterol stones form when the bile accumulates an excessive amount of cholesterol. Between these two types of gallstones, cholesterol stones tend to be much more common in the US.
Size of Gallstones
One thing that can affect the gallstones symptoms is the actual size of the gallstones that form. The sizes range from a small grain of sand to even as huge as a golf ball. Do take note that it is possible for a patient to have gallstones of varying sizes. It is also quite common for patients to have a lot of small stones than having one large stone.
In case a patient develops many small gallstones, these usually form into sludge. Remember that both the size and the quantity of the gallstones that form will basically be a determinant whether there will be gallstones symptoms or not. However, remember that there isn’t a combination of size or amount of stones that will foretell whether any symptom will occur or not.
Gallstones Symptoms
The majority of people who develop gallstones usually do not show any symptoms. Around 60 to 80 percent of all people with gallstones do not require treatment, do not know they have gallstones, and do not exhibit the symptoms associated with the said condition. However, do take note that symptoms will occur usually whenever complications develop.
The said symptoms of pain are usually referred to as attacks since they come in different episodes. Episodes of attacks occur after a few days, sometimes weeks, or even months. Some patients experience episodes years apart. Pain usually radiates to the back or the right shoulder and frequently would occur at night. Other common gallstones symptoms include fever, nausea, indigestion, vomiting, belching, intolerance to greasy food, bloating, and jaundice. The serious signs are jaundice, fever, and persistent pain.
